For the second year in a row, the Chapel Hill women’s cross country team took second place at the 3A state championship meet, finishing as runners-up to eventual champions Cuthbertson High School on November 9 at Kernersville.

The Tigers have a storied history of success with 12 state championships, most recently capturing titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Four Chapel Hill runners finished in the top 25, as the Tigers accumulated a score of 82, edging out third-place Weddington High School, which finished with 92 points.

Sophomore Amelia Maughan led the team, placing eighth with a time of 18:29.28, and three other Tigers finished in the top 25.

Sophomore Abby Weber (18:43.84) and senior captain Megan Marvin (18:49.84) finished in 11th and 16th places respectively, while junior Sydney Runkle (19:04.68) finished in 23rd place.

Freshman Nora Daley rounded out the top five runners, securing 32nd place with a time of 19:26.94.

This season marked the first time in which five different Tiger runners broke 19 minutes in a race.

“We worked really hard just to be in a position to try and win states. This season could not have gone better. We were the fastest team in Chapel Hill history,” Marvin said.

The girls took home first place and the 3A Mideast Regional title to qualify for the state meet. Five of the top ten spots at the meet in Pittsboro were filled by Tiger runners.
