Alive at 27, a rock band featuring three Chapel Hill High School students, self-released What Could Go Wrong?, its first extended play (EP) record, this summer.

Alive at 27 debuted the EP in a release show on July 22 at 2nd Wind, a venue in Carrboro.

The band formed two years ago when seniors Lorelei Pyun-Christian and Jason Yost and junior Cami Parrish worked together at Nightsound Studios in Carrboro during a summer camp. The trio recorded the EP at the same studio and has continued to play together since.

The band said the recording process itself was quick, though the editing took longer. Alive at 27 composed the EP’s six alternative rock songs over the last school year, including its first single “Gray Eyes.”

Pyun-Christian is the primary songwriter for the trio. “I come up with words and melodies, and Jason and Cami flesh it out,” she said.

Yost, though, said he is content allowing Pyun-Christian to take the reins. “She hands us the pieces and says, ‘I have this part and the structure. You guys do your thing.’”

“I give them the skeleton and they give me the meat,” Pyun-Christian added.

The band’s most recent shows were on September 21, when Alive at 27 opened at student band Pajama Day’s EP release show, and September 29 at the Carrboro Music Festival.  The band will be playing at 2nd Wind again on October 7.

The band has booked several shows over the next year and has even hinted at a possible tour. For those who cannot see Alive at 27 live, the band’s EP is available on both Spotify or YouTube. Fans of the band can also buy physical copies of What Could Go Wrong? And the “Gray Eyes” single on the band’s website.
