After a four-year absence, Tigerfest returned to Chapel Hill High School on May 22, with multiple activities, learning experiences, guest speakers and Tigerfest merchandise.

Tigerfest allowed students to enjoy a day of educational fun with subjects they are interested in as the year comes to a close.

During students’ fourth-period class on May 14, homeroom teachers handed out bright yellow pieces of paper, each featuring two columns of choices. The lists featured educational lectures, arts and crafts activities, games and more to participate in during the four sessions of Tigerfest.

Student government later emailed step-by-step instructions on how to sign up for Tigerfest activities, one of which was the mandatory keynote session by North Carolina poet laureate Jaki Shelton Green.

Senior Dulce Salinas welcomed the return of Tigerfest.

“[It was] a great opportunity to be with your friends and just chill at the end of the year and do fun activities,” Salinas said.

The 2018-2019 student government decided to bring back Tigerfest to Chapel Hill High School in the hopes of raising school spirit and creating an easy, relaxing day of educational fun.

“Students work very hard all school year, and this is the one day that is all theirs to enjoy,” sophomore representative Emma Thomas said. “School can be really stressful and overwhelming, but Tigerfest is a day when students can come and decompress.”

Many students who attended appreciated Tigerfest’s return.

“Tigerfest was really fun,” sophomore Ella Amico said. “I enjoyed seeing all my friends, and the activities were entertaining, too.”

Seniors who were treated to a breakfast were also appreciative of student government’s hard work.

Senior Dominique Partridge was happy to eat breakfast with his friends.

“It was great. The food at the senior breakfast, especially the donuts, was awesome. I’d go again,” Partridge said.
